Pfaltzgraff Jug – Patriotic Gem

Pfaltzgraff Yorktowne jug

Look what I found at the thrift store this week…a big china jug in the Yorktowne pattern by Pfaltzgraff!

This beauty almost got by me, but I have been looking through other sections of the store in more detail, not just the dish area. This was in the home décor department, along with wreaths and other faux greenery. It came with a bunch of plastic cedar boughs, which I will find another use for.

Patriotic patterns aren’t just for the Fourth of July!

Yorktowne has a gray background with a medium blue motif. The federal eagle is not one of the regular stencil designs in this pattern. But it fits so well with the rest of the piece types, or used with other wares from other Americana designs.

I will use this as a display piece, as it appears it was always used by the prior owner. I could get a cork that would fit, but for here, I think just plain is the way to go.

What Makes a Patriotic Table Display?

We can celebrate America any time of year. A table setting in red, white and blue always works. I also like to use the Pfaltzgraff patterns that have been around for more than 40 years, like this one, that date back to the American Bicentennial in 1976. They were inspired by the home goods of colonial times, and work just as well in the 21st Century.

Muted colors that look like hand dyed fabrics, motifs from the history of the USA, china and stoneware that are reminiscent of handmade goods of earlier centuries – these pieces work in a traditional home like ours year round.

I really like the way this jug goes with the Folk Art pattern (in the background), another one that recalls home décor from centuries ago, and remains popular today. These pedestal mugs were another thrift store find.
